Trim v Wolfe Tones - Sunday Aug 11th - Venue Bective GFC.
Trim Premier footballers travelled to the nearby Bective GFC grounds on Sunday for their opening match of the Premier 2 Championship on a beautiful summer morning against local rivals Wolfe Tones. In what was a very cagey and competitive opening to the match Tones took an early lead with two fine points in the opening 6 mins, however, Trim responded with a very well taken goal from the impressive David Lernihan, who rose to field a inbound free and calmy found the net while under pressure from the Tones defence. This lifted the Trim team and they began to establish a foot in the game. As the half progressed both teams exchanged points, for Trim Daniel Murray and Darragh Heffernan both scored fine points, the latter may even have found the net on another day! As the first half was coming to the final minutes Tones led by 1, but scored two goals and a point in the final minutes leaving Trim with a mountain to climb in the second half.
HT 1-03 Wolfe Tones 2-08.
Trim came out for the second half focused on reducing the deficit and scored a very impressive 1-11, with Mikey Cole scoring a fantastic 6 points which was complemented by a very well worked goal superbly finished by Eoghan Ryan. A bad injury for the impressive Darragh Heffernan forced a reshuffle and Tones took advantage scoring a good goal on the break to stretch the lead again just as Trim had narrowed the gap to 3. Trim persevered and scores from Owen McGrath, Neil Sweeney and a brace from Lernihan reduced the gap to 3 points. Trim pushed in the final minutes for the elusive goal that would have levelled the game but despite been on top and the much stronger team in the finish, Wolfe Tones defended doggedly and held out for the win. Trim will look back on the goals conceded on the stroke of half time, it changed the game but the team can be very pleased with their response - 1-11 in the second half of championship football bodes well for the remainder of the campaign. A young team blending with the experience of Owen McGrath, Shane Downes, N Sweeney and others, it promises to be an interesting journey ahead.
