Áth Troim showed their worth, and well earned place, with a well executed win in their debut Round 1 game in the Meath LGFA Junior A Championship against Maolach last night.
Trim put in a confident, whole team performance last night to secure a comfortable win against a seasoned Moylagh side. The Irish weather was its typical changeable self, being on the heavy side during the warm up, following a day of strong sunshine and high (for Ireland) temperatures. A strong, cross pitch breeze picked up during the first half which helped to make conditions a little more bearable if slightly more challenging for both sides. While the temperatures fell, the pressure on the pitch did not with both sides unwilling to give an inch, though the visitors were the more successful of the 2 throughout the game.
As this game was their first foray into the hugely competitive Junior A Championship, the away side came to prove themselves and they didn’t disappoint. The first half saw the Trim forwards winning most of the kickouts while keeping pressure on the Moylagh defence. The Trim defence turned a lot of ball over, with the few errors made being capitalised on by Moylagh. Lessons were learned quickly with Trim adapting on the fly, using consistent communication to ensure they didn’t repeat the same mistakes twice.
The Trim midfield duo of Sarah Caulfield and Sinead Murphy were on form tonight, making some very clever calls. With their quick thinking catching the Moylagh players off guard and winning balls both across and down the pitch. The result of one of these moves lead to the first score of the game for Trim, a well placed goal from Sarah.
This strong, considered game strategy of win every ball and capitalise on every possible chance paid off; Shona White got the next score with a point and the trio of Emma Hanifin, Katie Newman and Sarah Caulfield popped 2 each over the bar. It was clear to all in attendance who had the upper hand going into the break and that Trim had a lot more in the tank for the second half.
Half Time Trim 1-07 Moylagh 0:04
The second half opened with Moylagh fighting to get a foothold back in the game and Trim fighting to build on their lead. One brief lapse in concentration from Trim resulted in the experience Moylagh side taking full advantage, putting a well placed goal in the back of the Trim net. A sharp lesson learned in what switching off, even for a second, can result in against a side like Moylagh who have stayed in Junior A for a number of seasons.
In response to this, Trim went on the attack, going on a point scoring spree. A fantastic movement got the ball into the always reliable hands of Katie Newman, who, found the perfect angle and snuck the ball over the head of the keeper into the back of the Moylagh net.
Trim made one substitution towards the middle of the second half with Meg Ní Scolaí coming on for Shona White. Meg made her presence felt very quickly scoring a point and a 3rd goal again from some very fast paced play from the other end of the pitch.
The last kick out of the game came in injury time from the always strong Trim goalie Gráinne Ní Laoire, the ball made it to Anna Foley who popped it over the bar.
The final whistle blew moments later and the visitors were left delighted with their confident win and excellent start to the campaign.
