FT Trim 0-18 : Donaghmore Ashbourne 2-11

DIARY DATE - SEMI FINAL - the lads now meet Navan O’Mahonys in a semi final on Wednesday 8th July – Venue Trim GAA – Thrown in 6.45pm

Last Wednesday evening Trim’s minor hurlers travelled to Ashbourne to play their final round of league fixtures. Trim played with the benefit of a stiff breeze in the first half and opened the scoring with a free from Ruairi McCaffery. Jesse O’Rourke put Trim ahead again in the fifth minute after the hosts had equalised a minute earlier. Donaghmore Ashbourne enjoyed the majority of the possession in the opening period but shot a number of wides and only added one point in that 15 minute spell. Trim responded with two Ruairi McCaffery frees. Donaghmore Ashbourne took the lead in the 26th minute when they managed to find the net from a short range free. Two more McCaffery frees in as many minutes brought the sides level again before Jesse O’Rourke put the Trim men back in front with a fine point from play. O’Rourke would go on to register another 3 points from play in the following 5 minutes. Unfortunately for Trim Donaghmore Ashbourne added their second goal of the game during that same period. Things could have been worse from Trim as Ashbourne would have added a third goal before half time if it was not for a fantastic save from Trim goalkeeper John McMoreland.

Half Time score Donaghmore Ashbourne 2-05, Trim 0-10.

The home side again started the second half brightly and found themselves 3 points ahead after 15 minutes of the second half with Trim’s solitary score coming from another McCaffery free. At this stage it looked like the game might be slipping away from Trim. A fine long range point from wingback Ronan O’Hara seemed to give the side a much needed lift. An Ashbourne free was answered by Trim points from Ruairi McCaffery and Conor O’Reilly. Both sides then exchanged  a couple of points (the two Trim points coming from Ruairi McCaffery) before Lee Keaney drew the sides level in the final minute. In the first minute of injury time Trim were awarded a free inside their own half and Ruairi McCaffery continued his exhibition of free taking putting Trim back into the lead. Donaghmore Ashbourne had one last chance to take something from the game but some resolute Trim defending forced Ashbourne to shoot wide after a long range free had dropped short into the Trim goalmouth.
