Final Score:  Trim 2-15; Kildalkey 2-17

Never was the old cliché, ‘a game of two halves’, more evident than in this recent encounter between arch rivals Trim and Kildalkey. Trim did have a significant half time advantage, aided by a strong breeze but, though the early exchanges on the resumption were even steven, the visitors totally dominated the final eighteen minutes putting 2-9 on the board without a single score from the home side.

The opening half belonged to Trim and they had four early unanswered points via James Murray (2f), George Douglas and Mark Molloy. They were playing with a real swagger with some wonderful team inter play and it was only Nicky Potterton who kept his side in touch accounting for all of Kildalkey’s scoring of four points (2f) in that first half.

Joey Cole had Trim’s next score in the sixteenth minute and brother Mikey fired home to the Kildalkey net only moments later. Eoghan Ryan added another point and you would hardly have time to draw your breath,

James Murray had another converted free and there were further points from George Douglas, Darragh Heffernan, and Mikey Cole before James Murray rifled to the Kildalkey net after Ian Birmingham’s effort had been saved by David Harmon.

James Toher had Trim’s final score after superb exchanges between James Murray and Mark Molloy.

This was fast becoming one of Trim’s best performances for some time with Eoin O’Reilly solid in goals and ably assisted by a full back and half back line that kept any Kildalkey attacking threat well under wraps. They dominated mid field and there were fine exchanges and support between the half forwards and full forward line.

Another interesting statistic was that, overall, Trim had eight individual scorers while Kildalkey had a mere four. However, their wides count was greater, with a tally of twelve to seven, with eight of those coming in the first half.

Half Time: Trim 2-11; Kildalkey 0-4

The second half began positively for the home side with four points apiece in the first twelve minutes. Trim’s scoring coming via joey Cole and James Murray (3).

The windy conditions, now favouring Kildalkey,, had gradually worsened and this may have been a factor in the onslaught that was to follow.

Kildalkey were suddenly buoyed up and they seemed to be winning every breaking ball, were creating turnover after turnover, and were using overlaps to great advantage which left the home defenders with their backs to the wall. Trim’s forwards were constantly been prevented from creating scoring opportunities and the exuberance of that opening half was clearly taking its toll.

In a one-sided affair, the visitors were completely dominant with their scores coming from Nicky Potterton (1-7), Paddy Conneely (1-4) and both Niall Mc Nally and Patrick Potterton who chipped in with a point apiece.

This result effectively ends Trim’s League ambitions for this year with one remaining fixture on Sunday next, 21st June, away to Kilmessan.

With the opening game of the Championship scheduled for Dunganny on the 17th July, against Na Fianna, this should give Trim plenty of time to regroup and iron out any difficulties.
