A goal in the 35th minute, scored by Eoin O’Connor, after a cross from David Lernihan that would do Kevin De Bruyne proud, saw Trim steal a point from Moynalvey in the opening round of the division 1 league in windswept and rainy Trim on Sunday (15/3/25).

Rapidly running out of time and failing to make any inroads on a disciplined Moynalvey defence Trim resorted to long high kicks into the danger area in the hope of a break in the wet slippy conditions. Many efforts went wide of the mark or were quickly smothered by the Moynalvey defence. Well into injury time one of them went 30 yards to the left of the town goals and was chased by Lernihan. Without breaking his stride connected on the ball and sent it across to the goal area where “Stoney” collected and sent it to the net to level the scores as the referee sounded the final whistle.

It was a cruel blow for Moynalvey who opened the scoring with a Paul Harnan point in the third minute and never subsequently lost that lead. Playing with the strong wind into the town goals in the first half they pressed Trim from the outset and Cillian O’Sullivan added a point from a free in the 7th minute before Trim opened their account in the 9th minute with a David Lernihan free.

Moynalvey responded two minutes later when a great diagonal ball was collected by Paul Corcoran who evaded the defence and gave Eoin O’Reilly no chance with a low shot to the corner of the net. Despite playing into the strong breeze Trim began to get more into the game and added points from Sean Foley, David Lernihan and Daire Lynch.

In the 20th minute Gerry Dwane suffered a serious injury saving a certain goal and the match was held up for ten minutes as he was attended to on the pitch and moved to the dressing rooms.

When play resumed it took Trim a little while to settle and Moynalvey added three points, a two pointer free from Cillian O’Sullivan and a point from play from Vinny Walsh. Trim responded with points from S Foley, Sean Fitzgerald, after a great move from midfield and David Lernihan. Moynalvey closed the scoring with a point  to leave the half time score Trim 0-7  Moynalvey 1-6

The fact that Trim trailed by only two points having played against a very strong wind in the first half gave hope that they could see this opening league match out with a victory  but Moynalvey had other ideas as they harried and harassed Trim at every turn and Trim played into their hands by carrying the ball into contact on numerous occasions and being turned over.

Moynalvey extended their lead with a first minute point in the second half from a free by Vinny Walsh. David Lernihan responded two minutes later with a fine two point after good work from Conor Quigley. Trim drew level three minutes later when Gary Fleming pointed, again after good midfield work by Trim. The next ten minutes of the match was played in high winds and a veritable downpour and despite this it was Moynalvey playing into the teeth of the elements that added to their tally with points from Brian O’Reilly and Vinny Walsh.

Ian Byrne announced his arrival on the field of play with a fine point in the fifteenth minute and David Lernihan drew the sides level in the 18th minute with a pointed free.

For the next fifteen minutes Trim played second fiddle to a Moynalvey side that grew in confidence as Trim failed to turn their possession into scores, were frequently turned over by fierce Moynalvey pressure and failed to find their man when in possession. Moynalvey opened a gap in this period with two points from Vinny Walsh and substitute James Kelly.

Moynalvey withstood a Trim onslaught for the remaining seven minutes of the match until Eoin O’Connor saved the day with the last second goal.

Not the start that Trim wanted but there is no doubt the injury to Gerry Dwane upset their rhythm for some time and Moynalvey played throughout with the fire and determination that Trim will need to show  in future rounds if they are to challenge for honours.

Everyone in CLG Átha Troim wishes Gerry a full and speedy recovery ❤️
