"Debut Delight: Daniel Murray’s Brace Secures Trim's Triumph in Feis Cup Clash"

Two fine second half goals, at a crucial time in the match, by substitute and senior football debutant Daniel Murray gave Trim a well deserved victory in this Feis Cup  match on a sodden pitch in Dunboyne on Saturday (21 February). The first of the scores came within minutes of his introduction when Conor Quigley sent him a fine long pass and Daniel calmly rounded the defenders to send the ball to the net.

The second followed a great passage of play from defence through midfield finished by a well placed long distance pass which Murray collected on the left hand side of the Dunboyne goal about twenty metres out, beat a defender and sent the ball screaming to the top of the net leaving the Dunboyne goalie with no chance.

From the outset of the match Trim tried to stamp their authority on this match against a dogged Dunboyne side who started well with a point form their first attack. Sean Foley quickly responded with a point from play. Trim had a lucky escape a minute later when Dunboyne only managed a point with an open goal at their mercy. Conor Quigley evened the scores almost immediately with a fine point.

Dunboyne aided by the breeze kept the pressure on and Trim had difficulty getting their measure in that opening ten minutes. They were lucky not to go two goals down as Dunboyne missed two “sitters” under intense pressure from Trim defenders notably Gerry Dwane, Conor McGinley, Jack McGowan and Aonghus Shortt.

The next ten minutes saw Trim get more control of the ball and initiate some great attacking moves which resulted in a four point haul, three for Sean Foley and one from James Cullen. Two of the points came from some fine interplay between the forwards and mid-fielders Conor Quigley and David Lernihan. However, Dunboyne finished the half the stronger and hit three unanswered point before the interval as Trim lost their rhythm when James Murray was injured and James Cullen got a black card.

Half time: Dunboyne 0-5   Trim 0-6

Caoimhin O’Neill marked his arrival after half time with a well taken point after five minutes. Both sides struggled to gain the upper hand in the opening ten minutes of this half as the defences dominated and the difficult underground condition meant mistakes were plentiful. Eoin O’Connor stretched the Trim lead with a fine point in the 11th minute and shortly afterwards Daniel Murray provided more breathing space with his well taken goal. James Cullen added a point before Dunboyne registered their first point of the second half.

Trim were reduced to 14 men again at this time when Sean Fitzgerald got a second yellow for an awkward challenge. The question on the sideline was whether Trim could hold on to win with thirteen minutes to go and down a men.  Dunboyne sensed blood and launched a number of attacks with goals on their mind but Trim had their own ideas and reorganised well, so much so that Daire Lynch a half forward ended up saving a certain goal in the 18th minute. Sterling defence work, fresh legs as substitutes were rolled in and some great fast passing movements ensured that Trim not only held on but increased their lead with 1-1 from Daniel Murray and a superb 2 pointer from Conor Quigley to leave the final score Dunboyne 0-6 Trim 2-13.
