Trim Rue Missed Chances
Trim’s inexperience and lack of match time together proved to be the difference between them and Oldcastle in the opening round of the Division 6 League in Trim on Thursday night (20th March). The final score of Trim 1-6 Oldcastle 1-14 does not reflect the effort and amount of play the Trim lads had but a lack of composure in front of the goals which resulted in twelve wides and numerous misplaced last passes cost them dearly.
They started in lively manner and dominated the first five minutes scoring a point in the third minute and splitting the Oldcastle defence wide open on two occasions but fluffing the goal chances that came their way. Oldcastle settled and scored three points between the 5th and 10th minute. Trim missed another goal before Oldcastle rattled the Trim net with a goal in the 13th minute.
Trim dominated possession for a considerable part of the next ten minutes but failed to score despite creating a number chances including at least one goal chance. David Boyle sored the resultant 45metre kick magnificently to cancel a 19th minute point from Oldcastle. The sides swopped two points in the last ten minutes of the first half to leave the half time score Trim 0-3 Oldcastle 1-6
Trim started the second half well with a Neil Sweeney free and a great goal from Conor McKeown after a brilliant flowing move from midfield in the opening five minutes. Oldcastle responded well with four points by the 10th minute. Despite dominating possession over the next ten minutes Trim only added a further two points (Neil Sweeney frees) thanks to some wayward shooting and a few good goalkeeping saves.
The last ten minutes saw Oldcastle add two individual points and a magnificent two pointer while Trim had three goal chances well saved and cleared by the Oldcastle defence and a number of wides.

Despite the manner of the defeat and the margin it is clear that Trim has the makings of a good 2nd team with this panel. There was fine displays by many of the youngsters and the team has a good mix of youth and experience. There are a number of other players to come on the panel who will strengthen it. This team will definitely improve with match practice and will challenge for honours later in the year.
