Tuairisc Cluiche - Peil na mBan Junior C Championship Round 1 v St. Mary’s GFC.
A resurgent second half performance from Áth Troim didn’t secure the win on the night.
Áth Troim’s second team welcomed St Mary’s first team to St Loman’s Park Thursday night last for their first round of the Junior C Championship. It is safe to say the game was a tough one overall for our home side however, the score line doesn’t reflect the home teams change of play in the second half which had them undoubtedly being the more superior team. Both sides played well giving the large attendance on the sideline a great game of football to watch.

St Mary’s were the first to take possession after the throw up and used this momentum to put the first scores on the board with a goal and a point. Trim found the strength of the St Mary’s kick outs challenging at times, coupled with the strong setting sun, which the visitors were able to capitalise on. St. Marys moved the ball with much more ease in the first half than the home side. A moment of sheer will and determination 5 mins after the thrown in, saw Trims Amy Boyle get the first score on the board with a hard fought goal. This was followed by a number of responses from St Mary’s that saw them pull ahead. However, credit where it is due our Junior C team went into the break without letting their heads drop.
HT Trim 1:01 St. Mary’s 4:07
After a team talk and quick review of where they were being challenged the most, the Trim team returned to the pitch with a new focus and determination. The second half was in sharp contrast to the first for the home side who gained in confidence. There was more communication, better decision making and less mistakes made across the whole pitch. This was the team their coaches knew they could be and while it wasn’t enough to turn the deficit around, Trim played more positively in the second half.
This very young team will take a lot of learnings from their first foray into Junior C. Their coaches were delighted with their second half performance especially the leadership shown when their back were to the wall. They didn’t let the first half hang over them for the second half showing a strength of character across across the team that has to be noted.

Junior C next meet Wolf Tones in the 2nd round away, date and time to follow.
Thank you, as always, to the fantastic support at the game from across the club. Shout out to some of the new members of the Adult squad who have returned to football this year, Captain Niamh Ferry, Caroline Dowling, Jane Dowling and Rian Kierns. We are also proud to say we had a number of our younger players move up the ranks from Minor & U16 to make their Adult Championship debuts last night, Ciara Ryan, Amy Boyle, Layla Stewart, Emily Sloan, Kate McMahon, Eve Lanigan McManus, Chloe Gunning and Emma McLoughlin. Another first was having 2 sets of siblings on the team 👏🏼👏🏼
The addition of these players to the ranks is a huge testament to them, and the work their coaches at underage have done with them over the last number of months. The future of Peil na mBan Átha Troim is looking very bright!
