🔴Peil na mBan Division 3 v Clann na nGael⚪️
Our Div 3 team welcomed neighbours Clann na Gael in the much anticipated 6th round of the Meath LGFA Spring League. It was heartwarming to see strong numbers on the sidelines, there to enjoy the sunny May evening and, what proved to be, a great game of football.
Referee John Kavanagh began proceedings a little after 7.30 with Clann na nGael winning the throw up and going for that crucial first score of the game. It wasn’t to be as Átha Troim came storming on the offensive, turned the ball over, driving hard to the far end of the pitch where Aoife McDonnell found the back of the net for Átha Troim in the first 2 minutes. A short time later, a free resulted in Átha Troim’s Katie Newman popping the ball over the bar. Some excellent work on the ball and strong defensive movement from both sides proved to be formidable and the scoring remained low. This, coupled with the visitors playing into the strong setting sun, gave a challenging first half for Clann na nGael.
The work-rate and skills of the Átha Troim side, against a very good Clann defence, resulted in only 2 more points for the home side in the first half, one from Bláithnaid Hughes and the second from some excellent passing play from Aoife and Bláithnaid who smoothly worked the ball to a waiting Rachel Hannon, who got loose and popped the ball over.
Closing out the first half with one more point from a free, taken by Aoife McDonnell, the home side went into the break ahead by a goal.
HT Trim 1-04 to Clann na nGael 0-4
Clann na nGael came out gunning and began their attack right from the off. With the sun to their backs in this half, they made a strong start, working hard to pull back the scoreline difference with multiple points from some excellent play to draw the game. The crowd got even more behind both teams at this point, with some fantastically positive support coming from the sidelines. Átha Troim, having made a number of substitutions, were up for the challenge proving their metal on a number of occasions by spoiling strong attacks from the visitors.
Clann na nGael were much more accurate with their foot passing, putting serious pressure on all areas of the home side. However, Átha Troim’s communication was excellent with the subs building on the work from the first half, bolstered in mid field by Abby Moyles who calmed the centre and pushed the team to keep working.
The pressure kept building with Trim pouring on the pace and skills which proved too much for the Clann na nGael defences. A searing goal from Meg Ní Scolaí followed by another from Shona White gave the home side the boost they needed to power through the Clann na nGael defence time and again. Another goal from Aoife McDonnell and 3 more points proved too much for the visitors to answer despite numerous attempts to do so. There was a total of 6 points over the bar for Clann in the second half showing they were not going to let their heads drop.
The work rate from both sides has to be commended however, Átha Troim were the stronger team on the day. They worked well together throughout the game. The accuracy and speed of their game is improving week on week. This team are proving with hard work, a strong team spirit and a determination to improve, you can go from strength to strength.
Next up is the refixed game v Moynalvey away this Thursday at 7:30.
