Trim 2-15 Na Fianna 1-06

Trim Ladies advanced to the Semi Final of this years Junior Championship with an impressive win over Na Fianna on Monday evening at St Lomans Park.

With a stiff wind, Trim Captain Kate Dunne, won the toss and choose to play into the wind in the first half. Both teams started well and Trim were first on the board with Kate Dunne running the length of the field exchanging passes before cooly slotting over the bar. This was swiftly followed up when Katie Newman converted a free after being fouled herself. The visitors then replied with a point of their own. Trim were playing good football through the hands and were creating some good scoring opportunities but kicking against the wind was proving to be difficult. Trims next score came from the boot of Shona White as Trim led by 2 pts going into the Water break.

As both teams now got into their stride., the game became a physical affair, non more evident than in midfield where Anna Bolger and Rachel Mc Cormack were immense in the middle. Na Fianna were however to have their best part of the game in this second quarter. They raised a green flag almost immediately with what the Trim defence will consider a soft goal to concede. The away team then added another point as Trim struggled to work the ball out against, what was now a strong wind. Trim continued to play their passing game and worked a couple of fine points from the busy Lauren Fagan and Sophia Maguire. Both teams traded a point each before half time to leave the score at the break at Trim 0-06 Na Fianna 1-05. Against the wind, Trim had done well to keep the visitors to a 2 pt game. Credit must go to Trim Keeper Jodie Leavy for some great goalkeeping in that first half.

Trim started the second half with a bang, adding 4 pts in a blistering 6 minute spell. Points from Sophia Maguire, Aoife Mc Donnell and a brace from the very impressive Rachel Mc Cormack stung the away side. Trim pushed up on the Na Fianna kick outs and made it difficult for the away side to work the ball out. Trim won a free and the quick thinking of Aoibhin Shortt put Katie Newman in on goal, Newman cooly avoided her marker and clinically found the back of the net to give the Home side some breathing space. Trim led by 5. From here the home side never really looked in trouble. At the back captain Dunne was brilliant, she won her ball and drove out. Around her, Emily O Brien, Sophie Purcell, and Isabelle Varley were superb. Ellen Dennis was having a fantastic game. On the left side Aoife Slattery produced a display way beyond her years. Her link play with Aoibhin Shortt was critical to what was now becoming a dominant display by the home side. Trim pushed forward and were rewarded with some fine points from Mc Donnell, Shortt and Newman. The forward line of Shortt, Newman, Fagan, Maguire, Mc Donnell and White were a constant torment to Na Fianna as the battled and harried to win the ball. Between them they added a further 4 pts before the brilliant Anna Bolger , in midfield, got her reward for another solid display, when she raised a green flag from distance to end the game as a contest. Trim added a further 3 pts through Shortt, Mc Donnell and the brilliant Maguire before the Referee called an end to proceedings. Trim 2-15 Na Fianna 1-06. This was a solid team performance from the Home side. They now move on to a Semi final date with Senchelstown at Home on Thursday 3rd of September. Trim Management will be delighted with the teams display.
