Frankie’s Army produced a superb first-half performance before having to dig deep in the second half to secure a hard-earned victory over Ashbourne.
The lads came flying out of the blocks and it was Neil Heffernan who provided one of the standout moments of the opening half. Heff found the net with a brilliant goal, giving Trim a huge boost and putting Ashbourne on the back foot. Heff was causing all sorts of problems for the Ashbourne defence and continued to make his presence felt, winning a penalty as Trim kept the pressure on. Robbie Kenny stepped up and confidently sent the ball over the bar to add another score to Trim’s and his own tally.
Ashbourne managed to respond with two points, but Trim were playing some excellent football and refused to let the visitors back into the contest.
And just before the half-time whistle, Adam Englishby struck the net again, giving Trim another massive lift and putting the home side firmly in command.
At half time, Frankie’s Army had built a commanding 2-11 to 0-06 lead, with Heffernan’s goal and Englishby’s late finish among the highlights of a superb first-half performance.
It was a fantastic opening 30 minutes from Trim — energetic and full of purpose, and it looked like Frankie’s Army were firmly in the driving seat.
However, Ashbourne came out after the interval with a completely different attitude. They came fighting and began to eat into Trim’s lead, putting the Trim defence under sustained pressure. Trim were dealt another blow when they were reduced to 14 men following a black card for Conor Hurley, making the challenge even tougher.
But this Trim side showed plenty of character. Rather than panic, Frankie’s Army dug in and continued to battle for every ball. There were some big moments in the second half when goalie Stephen Doyle left the field and Frankie Murphy stepped up, and a brilliant play from corner back Gearóid o Donnell to get his name on the score board to keep Trim ahead.
Ashbourne kept pushing right to the final whistle, but Trim had done enough in the opening half and showed tremendous composure and resilience when the pressure came on and held on till the final whistle.
A thoroughly deserved win for Frankie’s Army, built on a brilliant first-half display and finished off with a serious show of grit and determination. This win sees them into a semi final.
