Competition for places on the Trim senior football team hotted up significantly on Sunday last (9/8) with outstanding performances from a number of players in the Junior Division 1 match v Ratoath in Trim. At least eight of the panel on display on Sunday staked their claims to get on the senior panel or to get the call to the starting fifteen in a fortnights time as Trim cruised to a comprehensive 6-22 to 1-8 win over Ratoath.
While there was a number of brilliant individual performances it was the all round teamwork and commitment of the Trim lads from one to fifteen that caught the eye. Ratoath opened the scoring after two minutes with a converted 45 but Trim responded in devastating fashion a minute later when Mikey Cullen received a pass from brother James and crashed the ball to the net. Ratoath responded with a point from a well taken 45. Trim responded a few minutes later with an Ian Byrne goal after a beautiful pass from Mikey Cullen.
Trim kept up the pressure and Mikey Cole was narrowly wide before he registered his first point (of a 1-7 total), in the ninth minute. From there on to the end of the half Trim dominated and added a point from Ian Byrne, a goal from Davy Murtagh, 1-1 from Mikey Cole and points from Daragh Heffernan and Sean Foley. Ratoath only secured 0-3 in the same period to leave the half time score Trim 4-5 Ratoath 0-5.
Mikey Cullen showed Trim meant business from the throw in when he used the breeze to slot over the first two pointer of the match within seconds of the restart. Ratoath looked as if they wanted to make a match of it with two quick points in the 2nd and 4th minutes but Trim responded quickly with another Mikey Cullen two pointer, a converted 45 from Ian Byrne, a Mikey Cole goal after a precise Davy Murtagh pass.
Ratoath raised a green flag in the 13th minute after a rare lapse in the very solid Trim defence but this was to be their last score until the 27th minute point while Trim registered 2-9 through Mikey Cole (1-3) Adam Donoghue (2 pointer), Ian Birmingham (0-3), S Foley (1-1).

This was one of the best displays by a Trim football team in some time. The defence led by captain Cian Downes was superb, held their shape throughout and made life difficult for Ratoath at all times. Ian Birmingham and Daragh Heffernan held sway at midfield for much of the match and were frequently there to aid defence or attack. Sean Foley tormented the Ratoath defence for the hour and was either scoring or making scores for others throughout the match, the two Mikeys, Ian Byrne, Davy Murtagh were dangerous throughout as was James Cullen until his injury. Even the Trim subs impressed.
Overall the fitness, determination, teamwork and fast moving one touch football was very impressive and augurs well for a good run in this competition.
