Last Wednesday evening Trim’s minor footballers took on Simonstown in the fifth game of their Division 2 league campaign. The visitors played the first half with the aid of a stiff breeze and took full advantage of the conditions opening the scoring with a two pointer in the second minute. They followed this with a goal and another 2 points in quick succession putting Simonstown 7 points to the good after just 8 minutes. Trim got their first score of the game through a Tadgh Foley free in the 11th minute and when Ronan O’Hara found the back of the Simonstown net from the tightest of angles there was a just a goal between the sides.  Both sides exchanged a series of points in the next ten minutes with the Trim points coming from Ronan O’Hara (2) and Tadgh Foley. Ruairi McCaffery scored Trim’s second goal after 28 minutes and it looked like the half would end with just 3 points between the sides but Simonstown added another point and a goal with the final kick of the half to leave the halftime score Trim 2-03, Simonstown 2-10.

The Trim side, now playing with the aid of the breeze, dominated the opening minutes of the second period and points from Fionn Ennis, Ethan O’Hara, Leon Harris and two from Tadgh Foley reduced the deficit to just 2 points. Simonstown, who had been guilty of some wayward shooting in first half, scored 4 unanswered points in just 5 minutes and when they added their third goal just minutes later it looked like it was not going to be Trim’s night. A Tadgh Foley points was followed by a Simonstown two-pointer leaving 9 points between the sides with just 13 minutes remaining. Trim refused to submit and a goal by Leon Harris, a two-pointer from Ruairi McCaffery and a Leon Harris point from play left just 3 points between the sides. A Simonstown point was cancelled out by a score from Ethan O’Hara before a fourth Simonstown goal seemed to put the game beyond the Trim men’s reach. A last minute Ruairi McCaffery goal again put just 3 points between the teams but there was not enough time left from Trim to create a final goal chance.

Final score : Trim 4-13, Simonstown 4-16.
