Trim Turn Up the Heat to Seal Strong Win Senior Hurling League Div 1, Round 3.
Final Score: Clann Na nGael 2-12 (18); Trim 1-22 (25)
Trim had a reasonably comfortable win in this recent League encounter on a warm and sunny Sunday morning in Athboy.
An otherwise entertaining contest was somewhat marred by a number of red cards near the end to Clann’s Ciaran Fitzsimons, for a dangerous tackle on Eoghan Ryan, who was left nursing a shoulder injury, and Trim’s Alex Fox, who got caught up in the ensuing melee and suffered a bloody nose for his unfortunate intervention. Earlier, Clann’s Conor McGovern also saw red for a second yellow card offence.
The first score of the game fell to Trim talisman James Murray, in the second minute of play, with Eoin Kelleher opening Clann Na NGael’s tally in the fifth minute of an opening half where scoring was scarce and wasted chances were plentiful. James Murray converted a Trim sixty five but the home side edged in front in the ninth minute through Ciaran Fitzsimons and Conor Mc Govern.
A second sixty five conversion by James Murray and a neat Alan Douglas effort soon restored Trim’s advantage in the seventeenth minute and, though Conor Mc Govern had the host’s back level with a converted sixty five, Trim had four unanswered points through James Murray, (2f & 1 ’65), and Ruaidhri Mc Caffrey, before a Conor McGovern converted free completed the first half’s scoring.
Half Time: Clann Na nGael 0-5; Trim 0-8
The second half began in spectacular fashion when, almost directly from the throw in, James Murray found Alan Douglas in a perfect position and Dougie’s clever flick ended up in the back of the Clann’s net beyond a stranded Brendan Smith. Conor McGovern replied with a brace of converted frees, the second of which was moved forward by referee Gus Martyn for dissent by one of the Trim players.
James Murray had a converted sixty five before Clann’s Luke Ennis capitalized on a couple of Trim handling errors and flashed the ball past an exposed Trim ‘keeper Eoin O’Reilly.
Once again, Trim responded well with pointed efforts from Ruaidhri McCaffrey and full back Ben Holden but an unchallanged solo run from Clann’s full forward Diarmuid O Donnchadha ended up with the ball nestled in the back of Eoin O Reilly’s net to leave the minimum score between the sides.
Ruaidhri Mc Caffrey added another Trim point and James Murray, once again, was spot on from a sixty five. Trim were beginning to assert before Conor Mc Govern saw red, with a second yellow, and they had further scores from Ruaidhri McCaffrey, James Murray (2), and Eoghan Ryan, who gained possession and guided over straight from a Clann Na nGael puck out.
The final quarter was dominated by Trim with a further seven points from top scorer James Murray. Clann Na nGael kept the scoreboard ticking over with four points of their own but it was never going to be enough to trouble a dominant Trim side who were staunch in defence and accurate with their scoring efforts.
Trim: Eoin O’Reilly, Danny Coleman, Ben Holden (0-1), Darragh McLoughlin, Alex Fox, Gary Fleming, Eoghan Ryan (0-1), Ian Birmingham, George Douglas, Jesse O’ Rourke, James Murray (0-16, 9f, 3 ‘65s), Ruaidhri McCaffrey (0-3), Daniel Fox, Alan Douglas (1-1), Daniel Murray.
