St Patrick’s Dominate
FT St Pat's 2-15 to Áth Troim 0-7
Trim put in a lacklustre display in their Division 6 match v St Patricks in sunny Stamullen on Thursday night (8th May) and paid the price with a 2-15 to 0-7 defeat. While the final scoreline is flattering to the winners, with 2-3 being chalked up in the last ten minutes, St Pat’s seemed always to be in control although it took the fifty minutes to shake off a stubborn Trim challenge.
Trim started well and were in control of the ball for most of the first fifteen minutes but failed to register a single score as move after move broke down and ended in one of their five wides of the half. In contrast St Patrick’s, with minimal possession of the ball, converted it to a four point lead.
There was some sign of hope when Caoimhin O’Neill caught a great ball and sent a great pass to Neil Sweeney who registered Trim’s first score in the 16th minute. This was followed by a point from Caoimhin in the 16 th minute and a further minor in the 18th minute to leave the minimum between the teams. But this was the closest Trim got as their opponents scored points in the 23rd, 26th, 28th and 30th minutes to a solitary reply from Trim in the 27th minute to leave the half time score St Patrick’s 0-8 Trim 0-4
The teams swopped points (David Boyle scored for Trim) in the opening ten minutes of the second half as both struggled to gain superiority and the defences dominated. St Patricks broke the stalemate with three points over the next ten minutes. Trim replied with a solitary point from Caoimhín O’Neill.
The last ten minutes of the match were completely controlled by St Patrick’s as Trim emptied their subs bench. A Neil Sweeney free which resulted in a point being the only score from Trim in reply to St Patrick’s 2-3.
While this was a disappointing result there were some bright spots for Trim with some great individual displays. Liam Kearns had a fine game and brought off a number of great saves and one that can be classed brilliant. Mark Dempsey, Brian Bolger, Danny Coleman, Luca Taheny, Harry Harlin and Cian Downes played well in defence throughout. Caoimhín O’Neill, Darragh Heffernan, Neil Sweeney, Mark Murray played their hearts out throughout.
This team has many fine individual players but have not yet been able to put a 60 minute team effort together as players young and old get to know each other. The experience they get in this league will help to mould it into a fine team for championship.
Panel L Kearns, H Harlin, B Bolger, L Taheny, M Dempsey, D Coleman, C O’Neill, D Boyle, D Heffernan, M Murray, A Donoghue, N Sweeney, D Murray, D Fox, G Douglas, L O’Raghallaigh, B Gaffney, K O’Dwyer, L Doyle, C Downes, D Buckley, S O’Connor, D Carey
