A classic game of two halves played out on a chilly Sunday morning as Trim’s Adult Div 3 Ladies fell just short against a well-organised Dunshaughlin & Royal Gaels (DRG) side in Round 3 of the league.
⚡ First Half
Trim absorbed early pressure well, with DRG missing two early chances before A. McDonnell opened the scoring with a point from a free. DRG were sharp in possession, pressing Trim’s kickouts and keeping the ball moving, but struggled to convert that into scores in the opening stages.
Trim’s defensive line stood firm, and ten minutes in, a quick move upfield saw S. Murphy and K. Newman combine to feed E. Hanifan, who rattled the net for the game’s opening goal.
DRG responded with a point, but Trim answered through S. Murphy, taking a precise pass from S. Caulfield. Trim’s defence continued to frustrate DRG, but a missed clearance gifted DRG possession, and a well-timed through ball forced a penalty. Keeper G. Ní Laoire got a hand to it but couldn’t keep it out.
Trim had a late goal chance before the break but found the side netting. A point edged them ahead just before half time, though the loss of S. Caulfield to injury was a blow.
Half-time: Trim 1-03 | DRG 1-02
⚡ Second Half
Trim flew out of the blocks after the break. H. O’Donnell, introduced just before half-time, made an immediate impact, linking up with S. Murphy to fire home Trim’s second goal.
With S. White coming in for K. Newman, Trim added another point, and strong defensive work from E. Ferry and K. Dunne held DRG at bay. But DRG’s pressure on Trim’s kickouts began to tell. Two points in quick succession narrowed the gap.
Trim’s response was led by A. Diamond, who battled hard to set up another point for Murphy. But DRG struck back with a fine score from a tight angle, and capitalised again shortly after on a Trim turnover.
With 12 minutes left, the score stood at Trim 2-05 | DRG 1-06.
Trim added another fine point from S. White, but DRG were growing in confidence and enjoying more possession. A free brought them within two before a failed kickout allowed them through for a crucial goal—swinging the scoreboard in their favour.
DRG now had the momentum and the lead, playing tight possession football and exploiting gaps in Trim’s defence. Two more points, one from a free, stretched the gap. A final attack saw a DRG player fouled near goal, and they finished with another point from the free.
📊 Full-time: DRG 2-10 | Trim 2-06
👏 Summary
A tough result after a spirited performance from Trim, who led for large stretches but were ultimately undone by discipline lapses and kickout pressure. DRG capitalised when it mattered most. Still, there was much to admire in Trim’s work rate, transitions, and defensive structure for long periods.
