Match Report: Trim vs Summerhill – Meath LGFA Div 5 Adult League

A five-point defeat to neighbours Summerhill in the opening round of the Meath LGFA Division 5 Adult League won’t deter this new-look Trim team. While the scoreboard didn’t quite reflect it, the progress made in recent months, coupled with their work rate and skill, made for an entertaining game that left Trim supporters eager for more.

First Half

After a week’s delay due to pitch closures across the county, the league finally got underway last Friday night in near-perfect conditions. Led by captain Emer Ferry, Trim fielded a mix of experience and youth, with returning players alongside several making their adult debut.

From the throw-in, Trim started strongly, registering the first point within 10 seconds as C. Gunning marked her debut with a well-taken score. Shortly after, R. Hannon added a point from a free. However, Summerhill quickly responded, capitalising on their strong passing game to hit the back of the net less than two minutes later.

As both sides settled, Trim’s midfield began to shine, with A. Hegarty seamlessly blending her soccer and Gaelic skills. Defensively, Trim was put to the test, but C. Ryan repeatedly read the play well, intercepting numerous attacks. The experienced backline of E. Ferry, E.L. McManus, R. O’Brien, and D. Brady, supported by newcomers C. Walsh and C. Ryan, met every challenge head-on.

In midfield, A. Donoghue and H. O’Donnell worked tirelessly, breaking up Summerhill’s advances. The industrious A. Hegarty kept Trim on the scoreboard with a couple of well-taken points. A welcome return from O. Slattery, introduced 15 minutes in, added fresh energy, as she immediately made an impact in reading Summerhill’s attack and creating chances for Trim.

Second Half

The second half began just as the first had—with Trim on the attack. A near miss in the opening 30 seconds signalled their intent, and continued pressure kept Summerhill on the back foot. A. Flynn came agonisingly close to a spectacular goal, hitting the crossbar, but she remained a constant threat with her marauding runs up the field.

Trim’s persistence was finally rewarded when a well-worked move saw the ball land at A. Hegarty’s boot, who cleverly lobbed the keeper. This put Trim ahead, but Summerhill quickly responded, levelling the game once more.

Fifteen minutes in, Summerhill struck a crucial blow, breaking through Trim’s defence with a series of sharp passes to net a goal. They followed up soon after with another, putting them firmly in control.

Despite the setback, Trim never dropped their heads. N. Barry was outstanding in goal, making a series of crucial saves. N. Mahon worked tirelessly up the wing, linking well in attack. Their efforts paid off when a brilliant passing sequence led to R. Hannon netting Trim’s second goal.

Summerhill, however, found another gear, edging ahead once more and closing out the game with a final score of Trim 2-07 (13) | Summerhill 3-10 (19).

A Performance to Build On

Despite the result, there was much to admire in Trim’s performance. Their ability to battle for every ball, create turnovers, and maintain composure under pressure was commendable. The experienced heads kept the team calm and focused, and the squad showed great spirit throughout.

A standout moment of the night was the presence of many Div 3 players on the sideline, cheering on their teammates—a testament to the strong bond within the adult squad.
