Trim got off to a winning start in the U19 Football League against Simonstown Gaels at St Lomanโs Park on Friday night. A long list of Trimโs more experienced players were unavailable due to commitments to County, College and School teams and so Trim started the match with an extremely youthful line-up. However the younger players were not to be phased by the occasion.
Trim started brightly and inside forwards Cormac Walsh and Daniel Fox were causing the Simonstown defence all sorts of problems. Points from Fox, Walsh and a James Murray goal saw Trim take a early 1-04 to 0-2 lead. Simonstown narrowed the gap with a goal of their own after 20 minutes. Trim responded with a second goal, a clever finish by Daniel Fox which gave Trim a 2-04 to 1-04 half-time lead.
The opening minutes of the second half proved to be a low scoring cagey affair with each side only adding a point a piece in the first 15 minutes. The game sprung into life for the final quarter and a flowing move ended with Cormac Walsh finding the net with a composed finish. Trim looked to have sealed victory when Daniel Fox, assisted by Lee Kearney, scored his second goal of the match but Simonstown, with the aid of a stiff breeze dominated the closing 7 or 8 minutes. The visitors added five points but despite sustained pressure could not breech the Trim back line.
