Meath LGFA U16 Div 3 Semi Final Áth Troim v Drumbaragh Emmets

With the threat of heavy showers looming, Áth Troim welcomed Drumbaragh Emmets to St. Lomans Park on Saturday afternoon for their much anticipated Division 3 semi final. After topping their group going into the SF spirits were high but the team knew they had a battle on their hands. Captain Emily Sloan lead the team onto the pitch where nerves were definitely a factor for the home side. First blood went to Trim by way of a point from play from Ellen Murray. The home side got the first points on the board with 3 points in quick succession in the opening 8 mins. The Drumbaragh defence rallied well to break down the attacks from the home side. With the heavens opening, the visitors attacked the Áth Troim defence in waves scoring a series of points, a number from frees, which ultimately put them ahead by 6 points going into the break. First half scores for Áth Troim also came from the boots of Kate McMahon, Ellen Murray, Chloe Bell with Aisling Downes adding to the tally.

Before the restart, and following one of the most level headed, mature and passionate half time team talks this author has witnessed, Captain Emily Sloan gave her team the confidence they needed to push on in the second half. And what a second half they had! Áth Troim dominated the first 20 minutes of the game, turning over plays, not being afraid to go all in for the dirty ball and fighting for every chance and opportunity they could get. Two early points in quick succession from Ellen Murray were followed by an inspired goal from Eve Lanigan McManus, which turned the game on its head and gave the home side the break in the clouds they needed. They pulled together as a team, took on board the advice from coaches and mentors soaring ahead of the visitors. Another goal came shortly after from the indomitable Ellen Murray ably assisted by the full and half forward lines of Maya O’Donohue, Aisling Downes, Beatrice Eivers and Kate McMahon who all worked the ball around the Drumbaragh defence. This work rate, boosted by some phenomenal work in mid field from Chloe Bell and Ciara McMorrow, resulted in points from Kate, Ellen and Chloe.
Credit where it is due, Drumbaragh did not give up once and mounted a last ditch attack on the Áth Troim defences which caused a number of headaches for Captain Emily and her back lines of Sarah Ryan, Lily Kelliher, Ailbhe Hannon, Sadie Kennedy and Ciara McLoughlin. The visitors had only scored 2 points in the second half and Áth Troim were comfortably ahead when the unthinkable happened. Some lapses in concentration left the way clear for Drumbaragh who capitalised and scored 3 goals in very quick succession much to the delight of their supporters.
The crowds for both sides were beside themselves as the gap was closing again, though they may have internally panicked, this didn’t show as the home side took a collective deep breath, dug deep and kept themselves ahead.
Deep into extra time, Áth Troim did not let up the pressure and pushed to keep possession of the ball. Praying for the final whistle, up stepped Maya O’Donohue who put the ball in the back of the Drumbaragh net, a point from Ciara McMorrow followed soon after then, after one final score over the bar, once more from Maya, the final whistle blew. The delight, and relief, was palpable! Many a smart watch registered elevated heart rates in those final minutes!
A huge well done to this group pf players who had the comeback of all comebacks and turned the game around with some fantastic teamwork.
The team would like to give a shout out to the players from our U14 panel who stepped up to support them; Goalie Niamh Allut, Holly Carty and Aoibheann Ennis. Thanks to the management and FLO’s with special mention to guest mentor John who stood in to assist Rory and Ronan in lead coach Jim’s absence. Maith sibh gach duine 👏🏼👏🏼
We now look forward to the final at the end of November. Their opponents will be Oldcastle, date and Venus tbd.
