Full Time: Trim 3-24; St Peter’s Dunboyne 1-15

The final score might paint a pretty picture for Trim in this must win final Group match but for three quarters of this intriguing contest underdogs Dunboyne belied their recent form and really carried the game to their more illustrious opponents.  A massive wides tally, eighteen in total, did not do any justice to the Trim men but in the end, in the words of a famous local bard, the cream always rises to the top and Trim demonstrated their class to carve out a comfortable enough scoreline before referee Ciaran Flynn sounded the final whistle.

Dunboyne opened the scoring with a third minute score, but unanswered points from Mikey Cole, James Murray, and Conor Quigley, together with three early wides, had the favourites in front by the twelfth minute. A quick break from defence, by the Dunboyne men, caught everyone off guard and John Mitchell finished to the Trim net.

Trim’s response was immediate and man of the match James Murray, his final tally was 2-11, replied with a well taken point before he blasted to the Dunboyne net following great work from Joey Cole. Further scores from David Murtagh and roving wing back Conor Quigley gave Trim a four point cushion by the nineteenth minute even though they had another three misdirected efforts during that time. Dunboyne, however, did not lose their focus and added three unanswered points, two from chief scorer Sean Quigley, his final tally of nine, brought the margins to the minimum.

Trim saw out the remainder of the half with four more James Murray scores, one free, to another brace from Sean Quigley, but also managed to bring their wides tally to twelve.

Half Time: Trim 1-10; St Peter’s Dunboyne 1-7

Trim were much quicker out of the blocks on the resumption and James Murray converted within twenty seconds and added another in the second minute. Dunboyne kept themselves in contention by similar scores but were left reeling in the eight minute by a wonderful individual effort by Joey Cole that rocked the back of the Dunboyne net. Dunboyne lifted themselves once again and had three unanswered scores to finish out the third quarter with a not too daunting four point deficit.

That, however, more or less, signalled the beginning of the end for the team sporting the familiar Kilkenny colours as Trim unleashed a tally of 1-10 to 0-2 in the final quarter with no less than six players getting on the score sheet, and highlighted by another James Murray goal after unselfish support from Mikey Cole.
