Final Score: St Peter’s Dunboyne 6-21; Trim 0-18

A meagre Trim squad of sixteen travelled to Dunboyne on Friday evening and although the result had a feeling of inevitability from early on, it was in no way reflective of the effort that the players and coaches put in given the trying circumstances.

The home side raced into an early lead and had 1-3 on the board before the visitors registered their first score from a Kyle Ennis free. A further brace of points from Daniel Murray and, the aforementioned, Kyle Ennis kept Trim in the hunt but these scores were cancelled out by three unanswered points from St Peter’s. 

As the half wore on it was becoming very clear that Trim were struggling to play as a cohesive unit mainly because many of the players had not previously played together. While scoring chances were thin on the ground, apart from a Conor Mc Keown effort and a further four Kyle Ennis points, they were unlucky that a couple of half chances did not find the home net which would have given the scoreboard a much better look as half time approached. 

 A head injury to Shane Downes went unnoticed by referee Sean Gahan and the resultant play led to a St Peter’s second goal. Indeed, the free scoring count of six to three, in favour of the home side, was a little lobsided given the sporting and free flowing nature in which the game was played.

Trim began brightly on the resumption and had an opening brace of scores from the trusty free taking of Kyle Ennis. A further trading of points was followed by another Dunboyne goal as the leg weary visitors were finding it increasingly difficult to maintain the pace of the game. 

The third quarter ended on a scoreline of 3-15 to 0-13, in favour of the home side, and a further 2-3 to no score, with ten minutes remaining, left the visitors in an impossible position. Nevertheless, Trim never stopped trying and they saw out the game with an 0-5 to 0-3 advantage mainly from the accuracy of Kyle Ennis and a hard earned, but well deserved, score from Neil Heffernan.

Trim played out the final few minutes with fourteen players after Daniel Murray was forced off with a blood injury and no substitute on the bench, Paddy Kennedy having earlier left the play with a pulled hamstring.
