🔴⚾ MATCH REPORT J.M. Food Services Football League Division 2 Round 9
Oldcastle 1-9 Trim 1-11
Coming into this match, only a point separated these 2 teams on the league table, so a dogged, hard-fought battle was anticipated – the match lived up to expectations!
On a near perfect footballing evening in Oldcastle, Trim opened the scoring with a first minute free from Tom Carmody that was answered some 6 minutes later by Oldcastle with a free in front of the posts.
From the outset what was most apparent was the frantic pace of the game, with both teams moving fast and hitting hard. Trim particularly looked like a team determined to put the previous week’s disappointing result behind them and gain much needed points to stay in contention at the upper end of the league table. On the 9th minute a great take by Declan Dowling set up David Lernihan who took the mark and slotted the ball over the bar. A minute later Trim surged forward again with a tremendous break by Carmody that saw the ball find its way to the very industrious Eoin Sweeney who cooly slotted the ball low into the Oldcastle net. Despite another point from Oldcastle there was a sense that Trim was getting the upper hand when James Toher’s pass to Carmody resulted in a superbly struck point, followed seconds later by a wonderful midfielder’s catch by Rob Bourke who delivered a laser accurate pass into Carmody who duly notched another point for the visitors. But Oldcastle weren’t inclined to concede this match anytime soon when they struck back with their own well taken goal and a point when Trim was caught flat footed up the left wing much to the annoyance of the management on the sideline. Approaching half time Oldcastle added 2 further points only to see the game levelled by Trim’s Carmody on the stroke of half time.
Half time: Oldcastle 1-05 Trim 1-05
One thing that has been apparent in this Trim team to date in the league has been the sheer hard work of their defenders. Cian Downes was unrelenting in his running, blocking and tackling while Dowling, McGinley and Sweeney provide a superb platform from which the Reds can launch attacks.
And in the first 8 minutes following the restart, these attacks delivered 3 points when Conor Quigley’s well-struck point was followed by another Bourke pass to Carmody who duly dispatched the ball over the bar only to be repeated by him again a minute later from a free. Oldcastle however were not standing back in awe, and duly struck 2 points of their own, to be answered immediately after by yet another Carmody free. But for the very alert James Murray, Trim would have been in big trouble in the 15th minute when he made an excellent clearance off his own line for what would have been a certain goal at a critical stage of the match.
In the final minutes of the game Oldcastle constantly attacked the Trim defence in relentless pursuit of a home result. Conor Quigley’s 21st minute point was answered minutes later by one from Oldcastle. But Trim stood strong and defended their 2-point lead stoically. With 32 minutes showing on the clock an Oldcastle free brought the margin to the bare minimum. With tension on the sideline mounting, Trim eventually put the game beyond doubt when Carmody struck a tremendous point from an acute angle that got inside the upright by a margin that would have made even Hawkeye think twice.
This was a game where no quarter was asked or given. Oldcastle put it up to Trim throughout the 60 plus minutes. But Trim also made life very difficult for themselves by failing to capitalise on good moves and by showing some lapses in concentration that allowed the home team turn over possession repeatedly……but maybe that’s what the league is all about……time for fine tuning before the big exams in the summer!!
