Trim Premier Football team met Cortown in Round 6 of the League in St Loman's Park on a beautiful Sunday morning. The game began with some good exchanges and an effort from Trim's P. Quigly which went narrowly wide before Cortown registered their first score of the day from a free. The first half was to follow a similar pattern, Cortown moved the ball quickly but were forced to shoot from distance and when inside with opportunities for goal they came upon an inspired performance from Eoin O'Reilly in the Trim Goal. O'Reilly made a number of point-blank saves including a fine penalty save on 15 mins. Trim pushed Cortown throughout the half and got some fine scores including a very well taken goal from Neily Heffernan who got on the end of a fine cross field pass to power home Trim's first goal of the game. The teams went in at half time nicely set-up for the second period.
Half Time Trim 1-03 to Cortown 0-08
Trim made a number of substitutions for the second half with one of those Owen McGrath getting off the mark instantly with a fine right footed point. Trim and Cortown exchanged scores as the half progressed, however, Cortown were more efficient with the chances they created, their more direct route to goal proved effective and they scored a couple of fine points from distance helping them to stretch to a 6-point lead. Trim as always responded very well, continuing to create good chances and dominated possession which resulted in a number of fine scores from David Boyle and another point from McGrath. Trim enjoyed the majority of possession in the second half, but a resolute Cortown defence managed to hold them at bay until the final minutes when Padraig Walsh, a second half change, was fouled in the box for a Trim Penalty. The penalty was slotted home on the second attempt by Quigly following a fine save from the Cortown Goalkeeper. Trim pushed for a final chance, but time was up, and we saw an entertaining game come to a close.
Not the result Trim had hoped for but a strong performance from the Team and Cortown, who brought that little bit more experience, were worthy winners at a very sunny St Loman's Park.
