On what was another bitterly cold night in St. Loman’s Park Trim played host to Dunsany in the fourth round of the division 5 Spring league. Despite a battling performance the result didn’t go our way and it was Dunsany who came away with the points.
The visitors were quickly out of the blocks with an early point. Trim’s defence came under severe pressure in the opening quarter which they dealt with superbly and made several crucial interceptions to deny Dunsany in front of the goals. The ever reliable Naoise Barry was exceptional between the posts for Trim when dealing with a number of high balls in the early stages of the game and she found a Trim player with her kick outs on every occasion. Following some wayward passing from the home side Dunsany gained possession and kicked over their second point of the game which was quickly followed by a well worked move from Trim resulting in Ella Mullen registering Trim’s first point of the game which helped to settle the home side. Trim relentlessly launched attacks from some great outfield movement but failed to raise the flag again in the first half. 3 more points and a goal right on the half time whistle gave the visitors a 7 point lead leaving Trim on the back foot with some work to do going into the second half.
HT: Dunsany 1-5 Trim 0-1.
Trim made a number of substitutions and positional changes at half time and straight from the throw in they had Dunsany’s defence under severe pressure with the Dunsany goalkeeper making a superb save from the boot of half-time sub Emer Ferry. A few minutes later it was Ferry that raised the white flag for Trim’s second point of the game which was followed by a point from Una Mitchell. Dunsany quickly responded with a point at the other end of the pitch. Trim again worked the ball well up the field and Rachel Hannon pointed her first free of the game. Dunsany with very little possession added a second goal. Trim did not dwell on this and quickly worked themselves into a scoring position with the hard working Una Mitchell in midfield adding her second point of the night. The home side were fiercely unlucky when Hannon hit the crossbar on what seemed like a certain goal. Trim ended the game with a point from play from Hannon.
This was a hard fought contest with both sides contesting every ball throughout the game. There was very little between the teams, Dunsany were just a little bit more clinical in front of the gaols. The management and players will take many positives from the game including 25 players togging out. What impressed in this performance was the Trim work rate that produced constant turnovers and the scoring opportunities created which on another day would have raised the white and green flags.
The team will regroup and under the guidance of John, Sean, Tosh and Tanya prepare for their next round at home against Clonard in two weeks time.
