Trim made a great start to the Premier Division 5 Football League in a wet and windy Trim
on Monday 24th March with a well-deserved 3-8 to 1-8 victory over Summerhill. This was a
hard-fought contest with both sides contesting every ball in the opening half.
Trim started well and showed serious intent with a few attacks in the opening minutes but it
was an interception from Brian Bolger in the Trim backs and a swift passing movement that
set up their first score, a goal from Sean Foley, who reacted quickest when a shot from Neily
Heffernan rebounded off the post. Foley followed this quickly with a well taken point.
The loss of Shane Downes in the 7 th minute was quickly felt by Trim as Summerhill took
advantage of his absence to fire home a goal and a point by the tenth minute. Cian Walsh
responded with a really well taken point from a distance. While Trim dominated the next 15
minutes and had numerous scoring chances they failed to raise a flag due to some wayward
shooting.
Summerhill, with little possession, added three points in the 19th ,21st (free)and 24th minutes
with no reply from Trim. A great save by Eoin O’Reilly seemed to give Trim new life as they
swept up the field from the clearance and Sean Foley again found the net after a great Trim
move. Trim had the ball in the Summerhill net again shortly afterwards but this was ruled
out by referee Shane Mooney. To their credit Summerhill replied with the last score of the
half, a point just before half time to leave the score
Trim 2-2 Summerhill 1-5
Trim survived an early scare on the resumption thanks to another great save from Eoin
O’Reilly. A Trim counter attack led to a 45 which was magnificently converted by David
Boyle. The sides swapped wides before Cian Walsh added another point after a great pass
from Kyle Ennis. Summerhill reduced the deficit to the minimum in the 8th minute and were
unlucky to see what seemed a certain goal come off the post.
At this stage enter the experienced Neily Heffernan with the first of his five excellent scores.
Summerhill responded with a point to keep in touch but within a minute they were reduced
to 14 men when the referee produced a black card after a Trim player was fouled.
Trim took full advantage of the situation and within minutes Neily Heffernan found the net from a
superb Kyle Ennis pass and followed up with another point. Summerhill tried to respond but
the Trim defence was magnificent and thwarted them time and time again forcing them to
shoot from a distance in the swirling wind. The play ebbed and flowed for the next seven
minutes until Neily Heffernan again pointed.
In the last few minutes Summerhill and Neily Heffernan swopped points for a final score of
Trim 3-8 Summerhill 1-8.
This was a great all-round display from Trim. The defence was solid and uncompromising
throughout, midfield worked tirelessly and but for a 12-minute period in the first half the
forwards were very effective and kept the Summerhill defence pinned back. The team was
a great mix of youth and experience todays result augurs well for this campaign.
